Types of Projectors

Which projector meets your needs?

Depending on how and where you plan to use your projector you have a number of options to choose from. Projection systems come in a wide range of sizes, from the smallest micro portable or ultra portable models to projectors designed for classrooms and meeting rooms or for large venue installation.

But when you’re choosing what type of projector you want, there are other options besides size - several projectors now come with wireless capability, for example, or wired networking. You can also select between projectors that handle different tasks; you might want to forego a multimedia projector for an overhead projector (conventional or digital), or complete your system with both.

The size and weight of the projection display system matter if you plan to use it in more than one location. A desktop projector can be installed on a rolling stand, but if you want to take your machine on the road you’ll probably want a portable or ultra portable model. For auditoriums and other large venues, you should look for a projector that rates high for brightness and durability.

The reliability and endurance record of the projection system as a whole is also extremely important, as is user-friendliness, particularly if several different people will need to know how to operate the machine. Price is always an issue, along with the manufacturers’ reputation. Some other features you might want to consider include the durability, life expectancy and cost of replacement parts - particularly projector lamps, which will burn out eventually, even under the best circumstances.

While modern digital projectors can handle video signals as well as computer feeds, few projectors handle all sources equally well, so whether the manufacturer is targeting a multimedia or theater market will probably influence your decision as well.
